There’s more to celebrate this weekend than just the Super Bowl. This Sunday, February 6, also marks the first annual Ronald Reagan Day and recognizes Reagan’s 100th birthday.

Ronald Reagan was a huge historic figure in extending freedoms and liberties around the world. Even so, a new generation of Americans is growing up without the memory of this great leader.

Particularly in light of recent events in Egypt, it’s timely that those of us who remember Ronald Reagan use this opportunity to share his legacy as a champion for liberty.

Last year I authored legislation (Senate Bill 944) making February 6 a special day of significance to commemorate the former California Governor and United States President.

This special day for Reagan will not create a state holiday, nor will it cost taxpayers money. Instead, Reagan Day will be what is called ‘a day of special significance’ just like other days we have to celebrate John Muir, California teachers and others.

I’ve set up a Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ReaganDay. Please take a moment to visit the page and share a favorite memory, quote, photo or video of the former California Governor and U.S. President.

If you’re on Twitter, you can join me in tweeting your memories using the hash tag #ReaganDay.

I’m glad Governor Brown is planning to make government more efficient and attempt to put California’s financial house in order.

But the Governor has it backwards. He thinks balancing the budget will solve our jobs problem. We actually need to solve our jobs problem to solve our budget problem. The Governor’s proposed tax hikes will only kill jobs and make our budget problems worse.

When I served in the Legislature, I warned that the last round of massive tax increases would damage California’s economy. Unfortunately, I was right. Since the February 2009 tax increase, California has lost half a million jobs, unemployment has grown 20%, and we’re still in a budget crisis.

Instead of raising taxes, the Governor should issue an executive order immediately freezing all new taxes, fees and regulations that hurt jobs. That would do more to solve California’s problems than a thousand speeches.

The Governor can talk about jobs all he wants, but it’s the private sector—not the government—that actually creates jobs. And right now California’s job creators have a severe hernia from trying to lift a mountain of new taxes, fees and regulations imposed on them during this economic downturn.

George Runner for BOE 2 radio ad featuring, Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association President Jon Coupal, is released throughout District 2.

“Senator Runner is identified as a taxpayer advocate on the ballot because that’s exactly what he is,” says Jon Coupal, president of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, in a 60-second radio ad that hits the airwaves today on stations throughout District 2 of the Board of Equalization.

“Runner believes that when people are taxed too much, liberty is lost,” Coupal continues.

“This isn’t someone that’s ‘going along just to get along’ in Sacramento, and that’s why the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association Political Action Committee proudly supports Taxpayer Advocate George Runner for the Board of Equalization.”

You can listen to the ad here.

On Saturday, it was my pleasure to participate in a tax protest rally in the Antelope Valley. At least 500 people attended the spirited event, carrying signs with clever slogans such as: “Born Free, Taxed to Death.”

Along with several of my colleagues, I spoke out against Prop 1A, the measure that will extend the recent $16 billion annual tax increases by two years. It is exactly these types of public protests that will lead to the failure of Prop. 1A in May and bring more awareness to the onerous tax-and-spend mentality that prevails in Sacramento.

As I stated at the rally, Taxation is an attack on freedom; you have fewer choices in life when you have less money.

Read more about the rally here.

Rallies will be held throughout Californian on April 15, tax day. To find out about a rally near you, click here.

Americans of all political affiliations are getting tired of the behavior of our government.

While bailing out the irresponsible parties, the government is pushing hard-working Americans to the brink of another revolution. As the government works to redistribute wealth, we Americans work more for less – and the government takes more and more.

On April 15th, taxpayers will rally on the South Steps of the State Capitol to say that we are already taxed to the max and we will not pay even higher taxes to finance reckless out of control spending.

Americans for Prosperity will bring their giant inflatable “Already Taxed to the Max!” (ATM) machine. We will have bumper stickers and rally signs for you if you do not bring a sign of your own. Expect radio talk show host Eric Hogue to be at the event as well as taxpayer advocate Senator George Runner.

Let’s send a message to the Sacramento establishment: Enough is enough!
